Hi everyone. Today I'll show you the final photos of the Balrog, his history and his D&D stats.
It was a huge project. I hope to enjoy him.

General

Balrogs were Maiar spirits seduced by Melkor, and may have taken demon-like form as a result. They are demons of shadow and flame. They were never more than seven according to Tolkien's son. However, in various writings there are references to entire "armies" of Balrogs. Gothmog was their captain during the 1st Age.

Melkor was one of the Valar who turned to evil through a desire for power of his own, the first Dark Lord, who later became known to the elves as Morgoth.

Origins

Maiar, like Elves, are immortal, but are essentially beings of pure spirit which makes them "demi-gods" for want of a better description for the lay person to grasp.

The Balrogs were originally Maiar (and therefore also Ainur), of the same order as Sauron and Gandalf, but they became seduced by Melkor, who corrupted them to his service in the days of his splendour before the creation of Arda.

During the Music of the Ainur, Melkor (known as Morgoth) began introducing themes of his own design into the Theme of Ilúvatar, causing great discord in the music. The Balrogs were among those spirits near Melkor who attuned their own music to Melkor's theme rather than Ilúvatar's. Therefore, they not only existed before the creation of the world, they had a part in its creation.

Barlogs History

The Balrogs were also known as Valaraukar, scourges of fire.
During the First Age, they were among the most feared of Morgoth's (Melkor) forces.

The Balrogs were first encountered by the Elves during the Dagor-nuin-Giliath (Battle-under-Stars) in the First Age. After the great victory of the Ñoldor (Elves clan) over Morgoth's orcs, Fëanor (Ñoldor semi-god leader) pressed on towards Angband (Morgoth's fortress). Despite the defeat Balrogs came against him. Fëanor was mortally wounded by Gothmog, (Balrogs captain). Though his sons fought off the demons, Fëanor died of his wounds soon after, and his spirit departed for the Halls of Mandos.

When Morgoth's fortress of Utumno was destroyed by the Valar, Balrogs fled and lurked in the pits of Angband.

Durin Bane, the Balrog of Moria is only one example of multiple different Balrogs. Durin Bane is probably the most well known Balrog and perhaps the best-documented of the Balrogs. He was not otherwise named but an important figure during the War of the Ring.

Durin’s Bane History – Balrog of Moria

Durin's Bane was one of the Maiar spirits that existed before the creation of the world (similar to Gandalf and Saruman), who descended into Arda with the Valar. It was eventually seduced and corrupted by Melkor (Morgoth), becoming known as one of the Valaraukar, and it then joined with the other Balrogs in Morgoth's service.

He fought in many battles of the War of the Jewels and fought in the War of Wrath. It somehow managed to survive Morgoth's defeat and fled east and hid itself beneath the Misty Mountains.

For more than five thousand (5000) years, the Balrog hibernated in its deep hiding place at the roots of the mountains in Khazad-dûm. It remained undisturbed throughout the Second Age and most of the Third Age, before the Mithril-miners of Dwarf-King Durin VI awoke it when they mined too deeply, in search of mithril. Durin was slain by the creature, at which point it became known as Durin's Bane.

The Dwarves attempted to fight the Balrog, but its power was far too great. Despite their efforts to hold Khazad-dûm against it, King Náin and many of the Dwarves were killed and the survivors were forced to flee. This disaster appears to have also reached the Silvan Elves of Lothlórien, many of which also fled the "Nameless Terror" (it was not recognized as a Balrog at the time). The elves began to call the place Moria, "The Dark Abyss."

For five hundred years (500), Moria was left to the Balrog. Sauron began to put his plans for war into effect around the year TA 2480 (Tolkien Ages) of the Third Age, and sent orcs and trolls to the Misty Mountains to bar all of the passes. Some of these creatures came to Moria.

It is unclear as to whether Sauron could have controlled the Balrog (they were both Maiar) but it's possible that they could have allied against the Free Peoples. The Balrog did allow the Orcs and Trolls to remain in Moria while it dwelt there. Tolkien does not mention whether Sauron was aware of the Balrog's presence prior to this time.

The Battle of Azanulbizar was the climactic battle in the War of the Dwarves and Orcs. It took place before the eastern gate of Moria in TA 2799 and was a victory for the Dwarves. However, the victors did not conquer Moria, because Dáin II Ironfoot, having slain the orc Azog, felt the terror of the Balrog at the gate. Despite an attempt to recolonise Moria by Balin in TA 2989, Durin's Bane remained a menace in the ancient kingdom of the Dwarves whose nature was hidden to the outside world.

In January of TA 3019, the Fellowship of the Ring travelled through Moria on the way to Mordor. There, they encountered Durin's Bane at the Bridge of Khazad-dûm. The Elf Legolas instantly recognised the Balrog, but more importantly, the wizard Gandalf happened to be there. Knowing that it was far more powerful than even the greatest of his companions, Gandalf challenged it.

"You cannot pass. I am a servant of the Secret Fire, wielder of the Flame of Anor. The Dark Fire will not avail you, flame of Udûn. Go back to the Shadow! You cannot pass."

Ιστορία του Durin’s Bane, ο Balrog της Μόρια.

Ο Durin’s Bane ήταν ένα από τα Maiar πνεύματα που υπήρχαν πριν από τη δημιουργία του κόσμου (παρόμοια με τον Gandalf και τον Saruman), ο οποίος κατέβηκε στη Arda με τους Valar. Όταν διεφθάρηκε από τον Melkor (Morgoth), έγινε γνωστό ως ένα από τους Valaraukar, και στη συνέχεια ενώθηκε με τους άλλους Balrogs στην υπηρεσία του Morgoth.

Battle of the Peak

Since Gandalf and the Balrog were both Maiar, they were beings of the same order. The Balrog attacked first with its flaming sword, which Gandalf destroyed with Glamdring. Gandalf then smote the Bridge before him with his staff. The staff broke asunder, a blinding sheet of white flame sprang up, and the bridge cracked at the feet of the Balrog, who fell forward into the abyss. As the Balrog fell it swung its whip. The thongs of the whip wrapped around Gandalf's knees, dragging him after the Balrog. "Fly, you fools!" Gandalf cried, and was gone.

As they fell, the Balrog's flames burned Gandalf. After the long fall, the two landed in a subterranean lake, which Gandalf later said almost froze his heart. The water quenched the Balrog's fire, but now he was "a thing of slime, stronger than a strangling snake".

Gandalf fought the Balrog, and eventually the Balrog fled, and Gandalf pursued the creature until they came to the Endless Stair and climbed to the peak of Durin’s Tower the Zirakzigil, or Celebdil, at which point the Balrog's bodily flames were renewed, restoring much of its power.

There, beginning on January 23, they fought what was later known as the Battle of the Peak. Gandalf prevailed and slew the Balrog, casting it down and sending it crashing into the mountains.

The entire battle, from the confrontation on the Bridge of Khazad-dûm to the mutual demise of the Balrog and Gandalf, had taken eight days.

Then "darkness took" Gandalf for a time (whether this means he actually died is open to debate) but then he "was sent back – for a brief time, until my task is done." by the Valar (or possibly by Iluvatar, the equivalent of God).

Nineteen days later Gandalf returned to life, and lay in a trance.

Three days later he was found by the Winglord Gwaihir, Lord of the Eagles, who had been sent by Galadriel to find him. Gandalf was carried to Caras Galadhon in Lothlórien, where he was healed, and clothed in white, and thus became Gandalf the White.

The ultimate fate of Durin's Bane is not known, as only its physical form died, as with all Maiar when they were "killed," but what happened to the spirit of the Balrog was not revealed. It is also unknown if it was the last of its kind, or if there were other Balrogs who managed to escape the War of Wrath and remained hidden in long forgotten places.

Η Μάχη της Κορυφής

Ολόκληρη η μάχη, από την τη Γέφυρα του Bridge of Khazad-dûm  εως τον αμοιβαίο θάνατο του Balrog και του Gandalf, διήρκησε οκτώ ημέρες.

«Το σκοτάδι πήρε» τον Gandalf για κάποιο διάστημα (αν αυτό σημαίνει ότι στην πραγματικότητα πέθανε είναι ανοικτό προς συζήτηση). Έπειτα «στάλθηκε πίσω» από τον Valar (ή ενδεχομένως, από τον Iluvatar, το ισοδύναμο Θεού του) για ένα σύντομο χρονικό διάστημα, έως ότου ολοκληρώσει την αποστολή του

That is all folks! This miniature was the biggest figure I've ever painted. I really can't remember how many hours did I spend to paint him. Of course if I would had painted him with an airbrush the paint result would be better and the time I needed would be half. Maybe next time!!!

Αυτα παίδες και για σήμερα. Ελπίζω να σας άρεσε. Αυτή η μινιατούρα ήταν η μεγαλύτερη φιγούρα που έβαψα ποτέ μου. Πραγματικά δεν μπορώ να θυμηθώ πόσες ώρες αφιέρωσα για να τον βάψω. Βέβαια αν τον είχα βάψει με τον αερογράφο σίγουρα θα είχα δαπανήσει το μισό χρόνο και θα ήταν ακόμα πιο όμορφα βαμμένος. (αλλά δεν τον είχα τότε). Ίσως την επόμενη φορά!!!
